NICARAGUAN CANAL PROPOSAL.
Favourable Report by Military Commission.
Colonel D.' I. Sultan, who, with other members of a Military Com- mission, was appointed by Prosi- dent Hoover in 1929 to survey, pos-. sible canal routes in Nicaragua, has reported very favourably of the feasibility of the canal scheme, and suggests'n route differing in detail from any previously suggested According to this plan, the canal would be 173 miles long, 70 miles being across Lake Nicaragus.
Between the lake and Greytown, on the Atlantic-Caribbean, coast, the San Juan valley would be fol- towed, but, as originally proposed, instead of traversing the_tortuous, windings of thd San Juan Tiver for The whole of its distance the route would only go part of the way and then cut straight across country.
