(By Hector C. Bywater.) I understand that salvage operations on the sunken cruiser Natal; in Cromarty Firth, are new and possibly a shedding sinister light on the mysterious fate of this ship.

Natal, a heavy armoured crui- ser, was destroyed by an intern. al explosion on December 30, 1915, while lying in Cromarty Harbour, and when a number of Jocal civilians, including children, where guests on board at a New Year party.

Observers in other ships aud- denly noticed flames and smoke rising from Natal. A general alarm was éounded and boats were ordered to be lowered, but before anything could be done a terrific explosion took place. The after part of the ship was blown, to pieces, and she sunk in four! minutes.

At first ascribed to an enemy submarine, the disaster was Inter

The latest addition to the fleet of waterboats owned by the Union Waterboat Co., Ltd., the motor vessel Tai Sam Ho 3 was successfully launched yesterday at the West Yard of the Hong Kong and Whampoa Dock. Co., Ltd.

This is the twelfth waterboat built by the Dock. Co. for the. same owners over a period of 25 years. The first nine of these boats were propelled by com- pound surface condensing steam engines with a pumping outfit consisting of steam driven hori- zontal duplex pumps, while the latest three bouts have propell-

For fifteen years the wreck laying machinery and auxiliaries of off Cromarty, only partially sub. merged at low tide. This year the Middlesbrough Salvage Co. was commissioned to demolish it. Up to now the double bottom of the ship has been nipped away, and engines condensers, and metal fittings have been removed, but owing to the slump in metal, prices the salvors have suspended operations for the time being.

If that be so, some other ex- planation of the disaster must be sought. Many people in the Cromarty district believed at the time, and still believe, that the ship was destroyed by enemy action, the theory of an infernal machine in the conl bunkers be- ing held by the majority.
