Overland China Mail,
A WHOLE WEEK'S NEWSPAPERS IN ONE.
A prolit of nearly $30,000 the highest yet reached by the Company was reported by Mr. A. B. Stewart, who presided over the tenth ordinary yearly meeting of the Hong Kong and Canton Ice Manufacturing Co., Ltd., held on October 9. The Chairman stated that the high profit was due to the fact that trading conditions in Canton and its environs have been more or less undisturbing, during the year under review, and they had been able to establish a number of new sub-agencies. In and around Canton. The OVERLAND CHINA MAIL gives a detailed report.
*
There was very little of a sensational nature at the Ninth Extra Meeting held at Happy Valley on October 10. Dividends were poor, times very slow, and the fields, the majority of them, remarkably small. The highest dividend of the afternoon - $70.30 was paid by Grey Dawny ridden in the last race by Mr. D. L. Newbigging. Favour- ites, on the whole, disappointed, and the absence of Apollo in the Double Tenth Plate, was noticeable. A full report is chronicled in the OVERLAND CHINA MAIL.
Torture was alleged by the prosecution in a case of assault heard by the First Magistrate in the Police Courts The torture took the form of tying a man's recently, thumbs behind his back, and putting the rope over the balustrade of a cock-loft, and then pulling the man's arms far as they could go. Handfuls of Hghted up as tapers, held by two Chinese, threatened to burn the victim, who had been suspected of stealing. A full account is contained in the OVERLAND CHINA MAIL.
*
A story of a thrilling rescue at sea was told on October 13, on the arrival in Hong Kong harbour of the 8.8. Kuei- chow (Captain D. Williams), from Tongku and Wei-hai-wel. The rescue occurred on the vessel's trip north from Hong Kong on October 1, in a position some distance from Wei- hai-wei, when she passed a water logged junk. On closer inspection it was found there were people on board. The OVERLAND CHINA MAIL gives a full account.
#
Sports are dealt with in detail in the OVERLAND CHINA MAIL which duly chronicles Hong Kong's defeat of Shanghai in the first lawn bowls encounter, and the first. Interport trial cricket match, between elevens captained by T. E. Pearce and H. R. B. Hancock, respectively.
