THE
CLUB STAND. Menaced by Outbreak of Fire.
CIGARETTE BLAMED.
A little while after the conclu• | sion of the Club's football match with St. Joseph's Club on Satur- day-about 6:15 p.m.-a slight outbreak of fire, dangerously near the Club's open stand backing on to the Police Recreation Club ground, was discovered.
Prompt and effective measures were adopted by the handful of members in the Club house at the time. Fire extinguishers were seized and rushed across to the scene of the fire. Within ten minutes the situation was in hand and the Fire Brigade, which had been notified by tele- phone, had little to do.
The cause of the outbreak is attributed to a carelessly thrown cigarette end alighting on a pile of hay cut from adjoining sports grounds and heaped against the stand.
