OIL POLLUTION AT SEA.
Bill to Make Separators Compulsory.
In the House of Commons in mail week, Sir Cooper Lawson naked leave to introduce the Oil Pollution Bill, which, he said, was in response to a just and growing demand not only from private individuals, but from municipal councils, and other local authorities. The object of the Bill was to make compulsory the equipment of British, ships with separators, which would have the effect of separating from the liquid discharged from ships the oil which otherwise was mixed with it. The effect of the separation was not only to free the oil from the water, but Thurs., 6th Nov. to save of which otherwise would be lost, thus an enormous amount of work would be avoided.

The separator had already been adopted by certain ships in the navy and by most of the ships of the Cunard, White Star, Elder Dempster, and Union- Castle lines. He had received letters from all these companies saying that the separators were 6th Oct entirely satisfactory and that the 6th Nov.
upkeep was practically nil, also 9th Oct. that there was an enormous sav-
ing in fuel.
The number of oil-driven ships had increased from a tonnage of 1 millions in 1914 to 2,785,000 23rd Oct.. in 1930, and it was

that two million tons of this crude oll was poured out of ships) 19th Oct. into the sea every day. The re- sult of this discharge of oil was to destroy seaside amenities, kill sea birds and injure fishing. The only way to remedy the evil was to prevent the pollution of the sca altogether, and if the smaller ships would follow the example of the big liners they would get rid of it altogether. If wo set the example, by passing this législation, It would be possible to bring the matter up at Geneva and get all the other nations to follow our example.
