CHANGING METHODS ON THE PUTTING GREEN.

"DIRECT VISION."

Technique in putting has changed recently more than any other part of golf.

Walter Hagen is now the leader of the group of golfers who are emphasising the importance of look ing directly down on the ball as you putt.

The method is to stand with the weight on the left foot, toe pointing directly at the ball, and eye look ing straight down upon It. The stroking of the ball is done with the right hand, rather than the left. Golfers I know who have adopted this method have reported that it' helps to keep head and body still, eliminating away, and that looking as directly down on the ball as pos- sible certainly seems to give, the mort exact visualisation of the line¦ to the hole.

A Handicap,

Lipping the Hole.

A few golfers have a great knack of finding the right length for the shot, but they lip the hole 'more often than they drop the, putt.

!

resumption of play they increased their lead.

Play was terminated in fast falling light with the II.K. Club forwards pressing,

Both teams were not at full strength, the home alde being with- out the services of a right-wing and the visitors short of a left- half.back.

BILLIARDS

5

Seattle, Sept. 10. Succeeding miniature golf, "big billiards" has taken one of Seattle's bathing beaches by storm.

Arguing that faddists usually go from one extreme to the other, L. O. Waldo, a retired sen captain, decided those persons who enjoy small scale golf would be pleased to play billiards on a table four times the regular size and with balls as large as baseballs.

t

He constructed an outdoor table near the beach, and every day bathers stand around waiting for a chance to play.

Waldo constructed the cues on the principle of, a gun, using Д heavy spring to gain the impact against the ball, the spring being released by a trigger-Associated Press.

an outstanding exponent of this style.

Harry Vardon's Method.

His method for both short and long putts was to adjust the right heel exactly opposite, the ball, and then direct the left toe somewhat in the direction of the hole.

A good many golfers adopting this method found themselves irresistibly tempted to incline more and more in the direction of the hole. They putted very distinctly off the right foot, with the right eye on the ball,

Once the habit is acquired, it is very difficult to break, but there can be no two opinions about the fact that this is not a good habit to acquire. Whether you putt off, the right foot or the left, the maxim must be "Eye on the ball, ear on the hole."

One thing about putting has not changed--that concerns the need to "follow through" along the Intended line of the putt.

Tapping the Ball.

One inch of extra accuracy, and they would be very near to becom- ing one-putt golfers. It will be . The suggestion is. that exactness of vision can only be secured by looking directly down on the ball.
