PRINCESSES OF THE PAST.

Elizabeth, Princess Royal of Great

Britain.

In the month of August, 1596, a little princess was born in Scot- land, and her father, King James 6th, named, her Elizabeth.

It was not until this princess began to talk that, she discover- ed she had an elder brother who was shut up in Stirling Castle for fear of being kidnapped. When she saw him she loved him dearly, and he thought there was nobody nicer than his little sister. They met very seldom, but when Elizabeth was seven suddenly old her life years

changed.

Her father became James 1st of England and Scot- land, and he declared Elizabeth Princess Royal of Great Britain. Her dear brother Henry became Prince of Wales, and the Royal Family travelled to London.

Elizabeth was not allowed to stay with her mother, but was sent from one great lady to an- other to be educated, and after a time she was placed in the care of Lord and Lady Harrington. She was now ten years old, and in

the Harrington's beautiful home she held a little court of her own, and was attended by a number of small maids-of-hon-

Decorations for Your Very Own Room.

It's great fun to make extra little decorations for your Very Own Room, such as pictures for the walls, vases for flowers, and

Bo on.

You can make a pretty flower- picture by cutting out flower- shapes from coloured papers, and pasting them on a sheet of card- board which has been covered with brown or buff paper.

This hackground can be any inches "size you like, but ten

wide and twelve inches deep is -good. Cut the card, then cut a piece of wrapping paper exactly the same size and paste it on the card. Smooth it with a soft cloth beginning at the centre and working outwards, smooth- ing away the wrinkles as you go. Put the covered card under a big book to dry. It's a good plan to paste another piece of paper over the back as well.

The little Diagram shows some flower shapes; make them about

Harrington could not make her understand how foolish it was to spend everything she had at once. But one day he brought some poor children to his house, and naked the princess what she could do for them.

"I have spent all my quarter's money in three days," she mur- mured hanging her head, "I will never be so foolish again."

After that she kept part of her money for the poor.

When she was fifteen, she held her court at Kew. She saw her brother Henry very often, and consulted him about all things, for her brother Charles was too One young to give her advice.

"My hand has been asked in marriage by Frederick, Elector Palatine of Bavaria!" she cried. "He also fifteen years of age, and our father has invited him to London. What are the Ger mans like? What shall I do, Henry ?"

Henry replied that she must see Frederick before she did any- thing, and a few months later, at a great ceremony, she met the Afterwards she young prince. sought Henry, who told her that he liked the prince, and suggest- ed that the three of them should go riding together.

But within a few weeks a ter- rible thing happened. Henry caught a chill and died almost immediately. Elizabeth was heartbroken, and, putting aside. all ceremony, the young Elector begged to be allowed to see her. Because her brother had liked him, she welcomed him.

After a time he told her that he could no longer afford to stay in London because his people were grumbling at the enormous sums of money he was obliged to spend.

The bowl is cut from blue or orange paper, and is three inches deep, six and a half inches wide along the top, and four and a half inches wide along the bot- tom. Paste this on the card, about five inches up from the lower edge; then paste the flow- ers on top, arranging them pret- tily with buds and leaves peeping out here and there.

A line'ruled round the finished bowl, as shown in the sketch, completes the design, and if you paint a red or green border all round the picture, it will look as though it is framed when it hangs on the wall.

The other sketches show how jam- effective ordinary stone jors can be made to look by be- ing painted with bright enamela bought in twopenny tins. They will make pretty flower-vases, And the earthenware flower-pot, painted with blue and yellow flowers, will hold a plain glass jar, into which you can put blos-

TINK'S CROSS

To make this useful article, you require only a few pieces of wood and a piece of perforated zinc. The bottom tray is intend- ed to hold a sponge, while the two shelves above will take soap and nail-brush. The little at- ment can be hung on the wall by the kitchen sink.

The back part, which is twelve inches long and five inches wide, can be eut from wood half an inch thick. Plane it on both sides, and saw away the two top corners. With a half-inch bit make a hole near the top end for hanging on a nail.

Cut two pieces A to the sizes wood three-eighths given from of an inch thick and nail these to the sides of the back part, as shown in the diagram so that the
