ELECTION NOT WANTED.
Tariff Question Still Uppermost.
LIBERALS HOLD KEY.
London, Saturday. While Labour and Liberal Free Traders denounce the campaign for an early General Election, week-end
speculation centres upon whether Mr. Ramsay 'Mac- Donald, at the completion of the present legislation, will face the House of Commons with a tariff policy courting defeat, or appeal to the country at the end of October with n, national pro. gramme, including tariffs and Imperial Preference.
op-
The Conservatives are 'con- fident that the latter alternative would bring a sweeping major-, ity, but City circles are to pose an election, except as a last resort, whilst the consequent de- fection of the Liberal "shadow Cabinet" would mean a Cabinet! reconstruction, with the probable addition of Sir John Simon, sup- ported by a good proportion of Liberal tariff converts.
It is now explained
that hankers' representatives to visit the House of Commons on Thurs- day is merely an advisory step in response to a Government re- quest.
The Cabinet will meet again on Monday, when an election deci- sion is possible.-Router.
