Rugby, Saturday. Very heavy rainfall has been ex- perienced over a wide area of the British Isles in the last two days and has resulted in widespread floods and considerable damage. Many villages in Derbyshire, York shire and elsewhere are inundated. Sheffield and Derby are among the large towns seriously affected. Derby is experiencing the worst floods for over half a century and unless the River Derwent subsides extensive damage will be done and large quantities of stock will be drowned in the countryside. The river is within', 18 inches of the top point of the arch on Exeter Bridge.
Traffic on several railway lines in the Midlands has been stopped by the floods.

A Geneva Press message states that the Permanent Court of In- ternational Justice, to which the League of Nations Council refer- red the question of the proposed Austro-German Customs Union for advisory opinion, has decided by eight votes to seven that the proposed union would not be compatible with the Geneva Pro- tocol of October, 1922.
