Very beautiful is Etna, with, son of Zeus better known by its mantle of snow merging into his Roman name of Vulcan-was

its green and fertile slopes, and the thread of white smoke al ways drifting out towards the blue sea. Etna stands magnifi-1 cently alone, and, strange to say, is beloved by the people of Sicily, in spite of the black and "hideous lava which from time to time pours from it and swallows up orange and lemon grove, vill- age and farm"-~-~-~-~-~-~-~

"In fifty years,in a hundred' years, the black lava will be green with vines, and give us back the riches it once took," smile the Sicilians. "The best oranges, the sweetest almonds, the richest grapes grow upon the lava when the wind has covered it with earth. And where could Hephaestus tip his refuse if not upon the slopes of his workshop ?"

Indeed, they half believe that

"Etna standa magnificently alone, and is' beloved, by the people of Sicily."

But alas, Hera and Zeus some times quarrelled; and one day when Hephaestus was taking his mother's part in a dispute, Zeus caught the boy by the leg and flung him out of heaven again.

He fell for a whole day before he struck. the earth, broke his, leg, and ever after he was-labre, Yet Hephaestus bore no ill-will; he only determined to make a name for himself in spite of his infirmity. He was clever, patient; and the god of fire, so he went to the lovely island of Sicily, and made a gigantic workshop not far from the sea, using the fire of the earth for his furnace. His abode was called Etna!

Here he forged armour for, the hero Achilles, the septre of Aga- fire-breathing bulls, memnon, and, as none of the gods could create a mortal woman, they ask- ett Hephaestus to undertake it. He fashioned Pandora cut-of the carth, and, not knowing what to do with her, the gods sent her into the world with her famous box of gifts. Now Hephaestus. was free to live in heaven or Etna, and he became the jewel- maker and, metal-worker of the gods. In spite of his ugly face and lame leg, he married Venus, the goddess of love and beauty.

And the Sicilians still watch that thin line of smoke drifting out to sea, and say that the mighty god of fire is working at his forge in the heart of Eina.

Finally, fix the rods C securely by a screw driven into each end through the legs. Deeply coun- tersink the holes for the screws. and then plug them to hide the screw heads.
