Long-distance telephonic communication between Hong Kong and Canton became an established fact with the officialspening by Sir William Peel, Governor of Hong Kong, of the new system, when he put through a call to the Pro- vincial Governor of Kwangtung, A reply was received from Str Canton, the reception at both ends being perfect. William Peel later congratulated the Hong Kong Telephone Company upon the expeditious carrying out of such a useful and wonderful scheme. A full report appears in the OVERLAND CHINA MAIL.

The unpromising outlook for shipping in Hong Kong was commented upon by the Chairman at the annual meet- ing of the Douglas Steamship Company. The Company showed a loss on the year, due to unfavourable trade con- · ditions. The meeting is reported in the OVERLAND CHINA MAIL.

The decision to embark upon a big scheme of land development and construction of houses was communicated. at an extraordinary general meeting of the Hong Kong Engineering and Construction Company, which is given in deal in the OVERLAND CHINĂ MAIL. The meeting passed a resolution authorising the increase of capital to one million dollars, and shareholders congratulated the Board. upon the economies effected in administration, and the greatly improved financial position of the company.

A frank admission by the Crown of illegal arrest and unlawful detention by the Police was made when the hearing. of an application by an alleged Annamite revolutionary leader was re-opened before the Full Court. The urgent need for more medical and hospital service for Hong Kong's poor children was stressed in the course of an address to Rotarians by an S.P.C.C.' official. The work of the Society was outlined, and some glimpses given of the appalling conditions that prevail amongst the poorer classes in the Colony. A full account appears in the OVERLAND CHINA MAIL.
