Desolate Sighta.
A walk along the water front this morning, to the west of the Harbour Office to as far as the godowns at West Point, presented a desolate sight. In every stretch of water between the numerous wharves along this section "of the Praya sunken junka and sampans were to be seen, and along the sea wall wreckage was piled high with boat women and children sitting on them with tear stained faces, bemoaning their loss. A Serious Wound.'
Dr. Smalley 'gave medical evid- ence, saying that prisoner had rather a bad wound in the throat. It could have been self-inflicted. The woman was in danger for about 48 hours after he had to operate on her. She would feel the after- effects of the wound for some time. Prisoner, asked if he wished, to question Dr. Smalley, merely mut- tered "Doctor cure me."

The Black Sheep. The foreman of the jury having asked where the husband, pro- prietor of the shop was; and being informed that he was away at the time, the husband was called to elucidate certain, points. At first
he denied that the prisoner was any relation or clansman, but later ad- mitted that the man was his own 'nephew. He was a bad workman" a dreadful savage." and "a terrible' gambler." He knew his wife had lent him money, but could. not think of any other reason for the attack.
