Chairman's Address.
In proposing the adoption of the report and accounts, the Chairman said:- Depressed Trade and Depreciation
of Dollar.
It is much to be regretted that we have to present such an unsatisfactory statement, this be- ing owing to the depressed state of trade throughout the world which has affected the shipping .companies. In addition this Company ad had to contend with other difficulties, notably the further depreciation in the dollar, which, as the earnings of the Leamers are on a silver basis has materially increased operating costs as a large amount of the ex- penses are paid in sterling or on a sterling basis.
Banditry Near Foochow Interferes with Cargo Exports. The increase in the Chinese Customs Tariff has had the effect of curtailing the exports from Hong Kong, whilst on the other hand the activities. of the ban- dits in the neighbourhood of Foochow have interfered with the export of cargo. It will be seen in the accounts that the steamers show a profit on work- ing amounting to $38,841.19 and that the sum of $75,000 (8 per cent.) has been written off for depreciation of the Company's
steamers.
Employées' Remuneration. In March last, the General Managers were most reluctantly compelled to notify the members of the floating staff that they world receive pay at the fixed rate of 18. 6d. to the dollar E from April 1, the rate at that time being on the basis of half at 18. 6d. and half at current rate which had been in operation as from July 31, 1980, previous to which payment bad, for some years, been at the rate of half at 16. 9d. and half at current rate and we are pleased to say that all members, recoguising the position of affairs have agreed to this arrangement.

BIG NEW HOUSING SCHEME
Financial Position Greatly Improved.
A resolution to increase the capital of the Hong Kong Engin- ceing; and Curttuction Com- pany, Limited, to One, Million lollars, by the creation of 400,- 000 new shares of the nominal value of $2 each, to be issued at the discretion of the Directors, was carried unanimously at an Extraordinary General Meeting held in the of ces of Messrs. She- wor, Tomes, and Co., this morn ing.
Introducing the motion, the Hon. Mr. J. P. Braga, Chairman of the Company, stated that it was intended to embark upon a new scheme of land development and construction of residential houses, Apartment buildings would also be constructed, if deemed expedient.
A Wider Policy. Mr. Braga, considered that the abandonment of the previous re- stricted policy of the company was justified by the greatly- improved financial position of the Company. Drastic economies had been effected during the inst sixteen month, which had been a most profitable period.
Answering questions by a Bhareholder (MF, T. N. Chau), the Chairman stated that the issue would be at par. The com- pany's available cash, were the investments to be realised, stood at $284,527. He considered that the new capital would be most suitably employed.
