THE BILLY BOYS' WORKSHOP.
Making A Saucepan-Lid Rack.
This useful kitchen fitment can be made from wood half an inch thick. As you will see from the first diagram, the rack is in- tended to hold six saucepan lids of varying sizes.
For the two sides you will need two pieces of wood, one foot eleven inches long and six inches wide. Taper both pieces as shown in the top right-hand diagram, and, after planing the sloping edges, mark on one piece the positions of the slots for holding the lids. To do this, mark a line A two and a half inches from the front edge at the top. Now mark a point on the line three inches from the bot- tom, and from this mark five

STORIES OF ANCIENT
SICILY
THE EAR OF DIONYSIUS.
In the tremendous rock near the quarry where prisoners were once kept is the Ear of Dionysius, the Tyrant of Syracuse. This entrance to a huge cave is shaped like a gigantic human ear, and is called the Ear of Dionysius be- cause the old story, says that the tyrant caused the prison to be that he shaped like an ear, so might listen, unseen to his pri- soners, and hear even their whis- pera. At the top of the cave is a small room hacked out of the rock, and here Dionysius learnt the secrets of the prisoners who collected in the great cave to es- cape rain, bitter wind, and the blazing sun which poured down on them in the quarries.
man who became their leader, who built their magnificent walls. who turned Syracuse into a famous workshop where engines for hurling stones were made, and who made it the greatest fortified city of Europe. though the fame of his rang in many lands, his power only seemed to bring him fear and hatred.

It is said that he made the Ear where he spent many hours listening because he was afraid- of the prisoners-who could not· possibly harm him.
He never trusted his head to a barber, but burnt his beard himself in the flame of a little oil lamp. So suspicious did he become that at To-day, if you murmur softly: last he would not allow even his Dionysius, are you there?" the wife or his children to enter his echo thunders out clearly, prov-private apartments till they were ing that nothing uttered in that searched to make sure that they had no concealed weapons. But cave can be private.
A strange man was Diony- his fear did not prevent him from slus. Of humble birth and poor, stealing the golden mantle from he entered Syracuse in the army the statue of Jupiter, on the pretext that it was too warm for of Hermocrates, and was left for dead on the battle-feld by the for the god in summer, and too Syracusans. And this was the cold in winter.

Pretty "Waitress Aprons.
A Wendy girl has to help to serve teas at her School Party, and has asked me to tell her how to make a pretty little apron to wear over her dress. Perhaps all of you would like to know?
Here are two patterns, both at-

WENDY'S LITTLE DRESSMAKERS. and skirt is made from two triangles of material-a small one for the top, a larger one for the skirt. Measure yourself to get an idea of the sizes; and I think it would be a good plan to cut out the triangles in paper first of all. Arrange them as shown in Diagram A, with a folded strip of plain material be tween for the waistbelt, and stitch both triangles to this waistbelt. Hem all the edges, sew a loop of the belt material to the top point of the upper triangle, to slip over your head, and the apron is finished.

much the same way, but the! shapes are circular. Diagram B shows you just how they are ar- ranged. Instead of hemming all the edges, you could bind them with bias binding to match the
waistbelt.
If you have any material left over, make a wee mob cap to match. This is just a 'circle of material, gathered round the edge, and sewn to a head-band of ribbon, as shown in Diagram C. It will look very sweet if you have long ends to the ribbon, 80 that you can tie them in a pretty how at the back of your head! 1
