Veteran Steamers at Sandakan.
But, even since 1917 Sandakan has seen several old ships that were at one time the last word in ship- building. Some of these were really beautiful ships, first and foremost perhaps being the Chang sha and Taiyuan, with their elipper bows, raked funnel and masts- and or the lower yard still retained foremost.

Ships are really most fascinating things, in spite of the fact that! even the best of them are unavold- ably associated in the minds of many with rolling and mal-de-mer. ; The history of their development well repays studying, and is full of interest. "What a dreadful looking old craft" was said in our hearing not long ago apropos of an admittedly unkempt looking vessel that was paying her first, visit to Sandakan for cargo. To the outward observer she was hardly a thing of beauty, but as ships and their histories are a kind of hobby with us we enlisted the services of a friend, who most kindly gave us some details about her. These revealed that she had emerged in her glory from a famous British shipbiding yard about 20 years before, incidentally when the uthor of the remark quoted must himself have been very small and possibly a horrid little nuisance.
