Questions of Concern to

Eastern Travellers.

The following table, issued by the Kwangtung River Conservancy Commission, shows in feet the

They are provided with three oil- fuel cooking ranges and all the they will have to pay more for their passages,

latest, labour-saving appliances.

As regards life-saving appliances, the proposals of the Committee in charge of-that-section-were :---------

(1) That every lifeboat on board should be so carried as to be readily available in an emergency, and no boat should be carried which will impede the prompt handling of the hoats that are available.

(2) That these readily available boats on ocean-going passenger

accon moda-

ships should provide tion for all persons on board.

Safety At Sea,

In addition, the Committee sug- gested that light buoyant apparatus should be provided, which will float in the sea and provide persons with something to which they can cling, if, by reason of the rapid sinking of a vessel, it has been impossible to get them away in the boats.

The conference also considered, among other questions, the follow- ing two:

(1) How far are Eastern people willing to pay more than they are paying at present to receive in re- turn more space, more service, more safety from sufficient Hfeboats), but only the same transportation?

(2) How much, should Govern- menta insist on their nationals pay- ing for extra safety and comfort when they are satisfied with pre- sent conditions?

The results of the conference's deliberations will, of course, be known in due course, but it is very certain that if the conference in- sista on fewer passengers. being carried and more lifeboats provided (even if not "boats for all"), the immediate result will be an increase in passenger money for deck pase-
