JUST ONE TOO MANY.

Police Hospitality Has Limits.

"A RUSSIAN LEARNS.

There are those who will insist that the third time is the luckiest, but there is one person who is prepared to state that the third time was just one too many. Ho is now undergoing a little cooling off in the Ward Road rest house.

It is not every police officer who takes a serious view of a case of "gazing on the wine when it is red." Unless a serious offence is committed policemen usually take a lenient view of a person alightly the worse for drink. One auch

person, a Russian, was taken to a local police station late one night recently and was allowed to sleep it off in one of the cells. He was given a warning and permitted to leave the next morning, says the Shanghai Sunday Times. •

A few hours later the duty officer of the previous night was | moving about the city in plain Hotels (old) had buyers.at.$17.15-clothes..when he was accosted_by_ with sellers at $17.35. He then stated that the usual fine of $5 for such an offence did not seem sufficient to stop the nuisance, and warned boat people that he proposed to increase the fine to $10 for the next lot of offenders and to keep increasing the fine until usum was reached at which the un- lawful practice would cease.

This morning ore, bontman and four boat women were charged be- fore his Worship with lying inshore at the Chiu On wharf and all ad- mitted the offence.

True to his word, the Magistrate imposed a. fine of $10 th each ac-

cused, with the alternative of one week's hard labour.

THEIR MAJESTIES. Leave for Sandringham For 10 Days.

Raubs had buyers at $41.50, but shares were not obtainable at the rate.

Lands were enquired for at $90.75 ex div.

Trams at $21.40 had buyers but without leading to business.

Star Ferries were reported to have been done at $93.50 with buy- ers at $93.

Hong Kong Electrics had buyers at $81, but no shares came out at this rate.

Ching Lights had buyers at $26, but no transactions resulted."

The part-paid Telephone shares were enquired for at $84.25, but without success.

the inebriated party of the pre- vious night.

That night there trotted into the police station a ricsha coolle with an inert mass crumpled in the seat. Ho deposited his fare at the charge-room door and asked for instructiens. "What, another drunk?," exclaimed the duty officer, and proceeded to

see who the visitor might be.

There he was, hatless, bootless and "dead to the world" the lodger of the previous night. He was given another opportunity to Bober up, and, on this occasion, was given the chance to tell his story to a judge.
