EUROPA & BREMEN

Passengers Carried in First Year.

It will be remembered that the Norddeutscher Lloyd, in its annual report for 1930, expressed satisfac. tion at the results obtained by their new vessels, the' Europa and the Bremen. Official figures have

now

been published which show that both these vessels met with great success. The Europa in its first year carried a total of 44,383 passengers of all classes, the aver age for each trip to Europe being 1,455 persons, and 1,478 on every trip to the United States... The New York office of the company states that these figures exceed by about 500 persons the average car- ried by any other vessel of the North Atlantic traffic. Of the numbers carried, 5.776 were first- class passengers from the United States-to-Europe. and 6.740-first. class passengers from Europe in at westward direction. Apart from the passenger traffic the Europa Carried about 10,000 tons of goods at express rates and 94,000 bags of mails from the V.3.A., and 75,000 bags of mails from Europe." The Bremen during its first year A total of It made seven- 54,153 passengers.

MORE DEPRESSION IN FREIGHT MARKETS.

:.

Shipping is suffering from an- other decided slump in freight mar. kets, and I am told that shipowners are having the greatest difficulty in finding any employment for their tonnage, says "City Man" in the Evening Standard:"

The River Plate still continues to take tonnage fairly freely, but there has been a decided drop, in freight values. With regard to Canadian shipments, there is practically nothing to report in full cargo business. The regular Hines are getting a fair quota of wheat par-- cela at very cheap rates.

Shipowners' main trouble at the moment is the report of the partial failure of the Canadian crop, which will, of course, upset owners' cal- culations for homeward shipments
