BUILDING IN CLOUDS.

Like little spiders they toiled, spinning a fabric of steel against the sky, says the Literary Digest in a summarised story of sky-serpers

Crawling, climbing, swinging, swooping weaving a web that was to stretch farther heaven

ward than the ancient Tower of Bubel, or than all the older towers of the modern Babel, as Manhattan has sometimes been tagged.

All weathers alike, close on a quarter of a mile skyward in a year a floor a day coming up the straight, and that takes some spinning.

Up to where Bryant Park is a pancake," as "The New York et puts it, "and the Statue of Liberty something to throw at a cat."

And with them rose a camera- man, always on the job Lewis W. Hine, the pictorial historian of the building.

He, too, learned to be a spider, a watchful one, smuggling. his camera to all kinds of dizzy perches. And thus he built up u

unique album of the human side of tower construction. The New York Evening Post calls it " saga of the men who, outlined against the sky on dizzy heights, Luse the iron of their nerves with the steel of the girders they build into modern cities," and continues:--

What Carl Sandburg has done for the Age of Steel in his poetry, Lewis W. Hine has tried to do pictorially.

Defy Death,

He has focused, his camera on the "sky boys" who "ride the ball" to the ninetieth floor or higher and defy death to the ataccato chattering of a pneuma- tic riveting-hammer...

From every height Mr. Hine has snapped these adventurous youths.

He has caught them gliding confidently across narrow girders with only the wind at their backs

for support, where a slip means

a horrible death.

He has pictured them swinging

on slender wires over streets a hundred storeys below.

These pictures make it easy to understand the speed and skill with which modern sky-scrapers are erected.

For the men who appear tiny as flies to the spectators in the streets beneath are shown here aa muscular, clear-eyed, poised, I
