Mr. E. W. Hamilton, (Postmaster- General), was the complalhant be fore Mr. Williams in the Central Police Court this morning, in a case! in which a Chinese was charged with bringing lettera into the Colony. Defendant pleaded guilty.

Mr. Hamilton said that the defen- dant was arrested on the wharf after leaving the steamer Chuen Les, a cargo boat from Macao. A parcel of letters, admittedly not concealed, was carried by defendant in his arms. The parcel contained 95 letters, of which six were for Hong Kong and the rest for foreign parts.

Rates Different,

He explained that the rates be- tween China and foreign parts were different, and that the bal- ance was in favour of Hong Kong. This bundle of letters saved $6.19 (local currency) on 95 stamps.

Mr. Hamilton added: "Your Worship will understand that twenty of these men per day. would make quite difference in the stamp revenue. The Chinese pos- tal authorities had already written to me that they knew this was hap- pening, and asked for my assist- ance. I ask your Worship to take 4 serious view.".

The Magistrate imposed a fine of $200 or two months' hard labour, In default.

The Police were notified of the affair, by Chu Hoon-shi (25), a coolie, residing at the Nan Yan College, Nelson Street, who stat ed that at 7.80 o'clock on Friday night when half way between Ho Kap Tsal and Chee Tong, a man named Tang Pui chased him, and, producing a file, threatened to kill him.

Relieve of Purse.

It appears that this man then relieved Chu of his purse, which contained $10.85, and, after do- ing so, he is alleged to have de- manded $50. Chu replied that he was unable to comply with it, and sent for two men from Ho Kap Tuai. On arrival these two men, under alleged threats, promised to guarantee Chu, who was then released and allowed to return to his mother's residence at Chee Tong.

At the house he related to his mother exactly what had hap- pened. Obtaining the $50 as re- quired by the "robbers," Chu re- turned to the scene of the "crime," where he handed the money over to one of the two guarantors, whom he believed had! given the sum to Tang Puil
