“Bunny" Austin failed to maintain his promising opening. After winning the first set he appeared to be walking away with the second. Crisp back-handers and beautiful ground strokes gave him a lead at 4-1, but Cochet then began to show signs of his former brilliance. He had now found his length and with great cross-court drives he drew level and hung on until 9-all. Austin then made the mistake of doing too much and Cocket went out at 11-9. Austin felt the strain of this strenuous second set in the latter duels and was forced to play on the defensive thus providing no difficulties for Cochet.
Jean Borotra in his match with Perry played an entirely differ. ent game, his strength and agility contrasting strongly with Cochet's restrained game.
