The trouble on the Bhutan arose as a result of the Chief Officer ordering some coolles who were having their meals in a part of the ship, where some explosives were stocked, to another part of the vessel. One of the coblies turned abusive and the officer is alleged to have pushed the coolic.

The Ganges which arrived from Calcutta was discharging coal. She had the gangway facing aft, and in 6th Aug,the way of the coolies who were thus compelled to work at some dia- advantage..

The Chief Officer and some las- cars were engaged in shifting the gangway to face forward when a gang of coal coolics. arrived along 6th Aug.side the ship. These men imme- diately started climbing the gang- way in spite of the protests of the Chief Officer and the policemen on duty. The gangway which was at the time being moved was not safe to climb and a rope ladder was 23rd July placed over the ship's side for the coolies: They, however, ignored the warnings and came up the gang way jeering at the officer and lascars. A fight resulted in which lumps of coal, etc. were used and there were minor injuries on both aides.
