MR. G. B. SHAW AND ST. JOAN.

His Talk From The London

Wireless Station.

Mr. Bernard Shaw went to the, London studio of the B.B.C. recently to' give a talk about St. Joan of Arc, on the five hundredth anniver sary of her martyrdom.

"There is no one, I am sure, you would rather hear than the author of the play," said the announcer, Introducing the igsturer to a vast unseen audiguet

Mr. Shaw himself began by say- ing: "How do you do, ladies and geatlemen”; and telling them her had promised to give them “a chat about that

extraordinary young very woman who was burned five hun dred years ago.",

He really meant " chat," he said, explaining that he had not got a manuscript mostly carved out Black or Brown of the Encyclopaedia Britannica, but was sitting there quite comfort ably, intending to say anything about St. Joan that came into his head."

Jesuit Priest's Protest, Father Woodlock, the Jesuit priest, preaching at Farm Street Roman Catholic Church, London, protested against the "impudence, almost I might say.criminal folly," of the B.B.C. authorities for issuing an Invitation to Mr. Bernard Shaw to speak on St. Joan of Arc

over the wireless.

"The B.B.C.," he continued. "had no right to let loose that irrespon sible playboy and mountebank to preach

a solemn occasion a panegyric of a Catholic and national saint.

On

"Mr. Shaw will have offended the reasonable susceptibilities of all who regard Joan of Arc as a martyr and a saint, and that at a moment when the heart of France and the entire Catholic world was focused on Rouen, sharing celebrations in honour of the Maid's martyrdom."

to the view of In a rejoinder Father. Woodlock, Mr. Bernard Shaw said: "I imagine from what Father Woodlock Baye that he agrees with Joan in the position that she took, which caused her to be burned. That, of course, is the Protestant position. If Father Woodlock, agrees with Joan, then,' of course, lie is a Protestant, too.

"If the attention of the Church is called to his opinion, they will not burn him they cannot do that but they will probably silence him. Everything I said last night he will find in the records of Joan's trial, He does not seem to realise that the Church had anything to do with it: What I said was the truth so far ns the historical truth can be ascertained."
