The Saguenay resembles very closely H.M. destroyers 'of tho Acanta clase.. On her tonnage of 1,320 tons, she mounts four 4.7 in. I guns and eight torpedo-tubes, ar ranged in two pairs of four.

On trials she developed 34,600 h.p. and achieved a speed of 35% knots.

The technical officers of the Cana dian naval service, anxious to secure ships suitable in every way for om- in Canadian coastal ployment waters, and to meet special tondi- tions peculiar to Canadian" require." ments decided, Sir John Thorny- croft told me, to depart from the recent Admiralty design in many instances and to evolve a design of their own.

The outstanding feature of the ship, is her accommodation, which, for officers and men alike may, without exaggeration, be described as palatial Indeed, the cablus, ward-room, mess-rooms, baths, and shower-baths compare favourably with the first-class accommodation. in a modern liner. LOSS OF THE INDIAN CHIEF..

Death of Last Member

of Rescue Crew:

The death of Mr. Charles Very rion, of Ramsgate, at the age of 35, has removed the last survivor of the Ramsgate life-bost crew which just over 50 years ago, carried out a remarkable life-bout rescue.

This was the rescue of 12-aur vivors of the crew of 29 men or the barque Indian Chief. She was out- ward bound from Middlesbrough to Yokohama, and was wrecked on the Long Sand off the mouth of the Thames in an casterly gale in the early morning of January 5, 1881. "It was not until noon that the newal reached Ramsgate, 80 miles away, and the lifeboat City of Bradford | put out at once, being towed by the tug Vulcan. It was after dark be- fore the ffe-boat and tug' reached the Long Sand, and they lay to all night in the gale. At day break they sighted the wreck. Only the foremast was standing, with; 12|~~~~~ men lashed to it. The 12 survivors unlashed themselves, and making their way along the rail of the ship, between the seas, dropped into the life-boat. It was not until 2 that afternoon that the life-boat, and the tug reached harbour again, 26 hours after they set out. The last of this crew has now died, but of the crew of the life-boat at Aldeburgh, Suffolk, which was out, for 80 hours on the same service, but did not reach the Long Sand until after the men had been rescued there are still five alive.
