THREE RETIREMENTS.

There was a very unusual deve- lopment at the close of the Yaumati murder trial yesterday, whon after a retirement of two hours and a half the jury could not agree upon any of the paints raised as to a

The Chief Justice explained that in certain cases a majority verdict might be accepted, The Jury_ac- cordingly retired again, but on their return were still unable to return a majority verdict of either not guilty or guilty of manslaughter.

Replying to the foreman (Mr. B. C. Field) His Lordship said that a majority might bring in a ver- dict of guilty or not guilty of man slaughter,

verdict of but any murder must be unanimous. The jury retired for, the third time, but were still unable to agree.

His Lordship, having questioned them as to their verdict, discharg ed the jury and remanded the prisoner. The casè was adjourned until Thursday next when Mr. Fitzroy, for the prosecution, will

indicate his line of action.

Prisoner's story was a strange one, and did not carry conviction at. first sight. It was difficult to be- lieve unless there was fear on one side and domination on the other. The prisoner had not run away after the crime, but he certainly helped to carry away the corpse, and remove the traces of it, as that he had gullty knowledge.

Before I remand the prisoner I should like to say some- thing with reference to what I' said last Friday, relating to the taking of a prisoner's statement

I will not say much now, but 1 would merely like to say that I have no doubt that the Magistrate acted in good faith in the interests as he believed of the prisoner.
