In considering how Great Britain has fared since the War, it is as well to deal with the period between 1924 and the end of 1929, states the May bulletin issued by the Department of Overseas Trade. 1924 was the year when the country had settled down after the post War boom and decline, and it was also

There is another point worthy of spe- cial note in connection with this question of unemployment. In 1924 thà number of workers actually employ. ed was 100,000 more than in the year before the War-which was a year of exceptionally good trade and very little unemployment. In 1929 there were thus 800,000 more persons employed In 1913. Meanwhile there had been a rising atandard' of Hying. Real wages (based on purchasing power and not on actual rates paid) have. increased by approximately eight per cent, since 1924.
Further, hours of labour have been reduced by about ten per cent, and there has been a greater provision of "social services of old age, and THE BANK OF TAIWAN, LTD. widows' pensions, housing subsidies,

This, he said, would require too many soldiers and cost more than three billion francs, where as the building of new forts at Ghent and the restoring of old forts at Antwerp, together with the erection of small forts in the forified zones of Northern Flan- ders, would cost only 600,000,000 francs and serve the country better than the fortifications of the frontier.
M. de Brocqueville also an nounced the probable creation of sharpshooters much alike to the a new regiment of Ardennes French Chasseurs Alpins.
