The Crown Forester of one of the far northern desmesnes of Sweden reports the heroic and self-sacrificing death of a hum ble tramping labourer, named Anders (Andy) Olsson, who, to- gether with another man, had been charged with the task of burning a certain quantity of charcoal.

It may not be generally known that charcoal is made by stack- ing up waste timber and cover- ing the same over with. turf and earth, the fire within only: being allowed to smoulder. The, work of stacking and covering up calls for a certain amount of skill, and constant care and watch is necessary to prevent the stack from flaring up into flame, for that would be the end of it.
