OLD MUSSELBURGH.
THE CHINA
In the realm of sport, as in many other departments of life,-}· there have been wonderful changes within the past forty years.
Take golf, for example, In the old days, the golfer just grabbed his bunch of clubs, tied them with a bit of string, put on a cap or a bonnet, and with one or two gutta balla in his pockets made for the course and got his game. Down Musselburgh way, Lords of the Court of Session, distinguish- ed medical men, heads of business houses and of big offices, arrived by train, passed out into the cab- yard, took a cab, and drove down to the Links. Great days these for the caddies, who were a numerous, company, mostly in tattered clothes or "hand-me-downs," which had been bestowed on them by their patrons.

Out for His Chance. These caddiea, old and young, were all fond of strong drink, and their complexions told you so and discounted the idea that the sun and the rain and the open air had everything to do with the ruddy cheeks and noses. Whenever the vabs took the roads, each and every one was soon the centre of a troop of tattered humanity trot- ting alongside, writes the Sports Dispatch.
Those tattered people were the Musselburgh caddies. Each was
out for what he called his "chance.". I sometimes think that the choice of that word which in the French language means luck or good fortune, was a tradition handed down from the old days and centuries of the "Auld' AII{- ance" of Scotland and France. Anyway, the caddles were out for their "chance," and they assisted Dame Fortuna to bestow it by run- ning the mile. between the station and the Links, anapping their fin- gera to the golfers in the cabs and calling out, "Me, air; me, sir!" in the hope of being engaged.
How they managed to escape | being run over by the cabs was always a mystery to me. It cer- tainly improved and demonstrated their agility and training for the tramping round the old nine-hole course. Eventually, the Town Council of the old burgh put an end to these picturesque capers and made it unlawful for the caddies to offer their services ex- cept at the end of the Links, close to the club-honses.
Then, the wisp of string round the bunch of clubs gave place to a leather strap; later, two such straps. Later still somebody thought of a bag for the clubs, Nowadays, when a golfer "goes forth to war" on the course, he is dressed and equipped in a way which would make “old-timers” gasp if they could but see the turn-out.
