COLLISION AVERTED.

"It looks to me rather, defen- dant, that you just paid no atten- tion to the lights, and just looked up at them when the cars about 'to collide," remarked Mr. W. Schofield in the Central Police Court this morning, in convicting the Chinese driver of a public motor car who was summoned for having unlawfully disobeyed traffic signals at the junction of Queen's Road Central and Garden Road on June 11, at. 7.35 p.m. In view of the defendant's good record his Worship said that he would make the fine only $10.
A Shantung Police Sergeant said that he signalled the red light (stop) against the defendant, and the green light (go) for a car which was driven by Mr. F. C. Weller, of the University. How- ever, it seemed as if the defendant did not look at the lights, and both cars had to pull up sudden- ly to avoid a collision.
Defendant maintained that when he was quite close to the phen officer the signal anddenly changed

Mr. Weller, in evidence, sald that the defendant seemed to be looking straight ahead of him.

Defendant contended that his view was obstructed.
His Worship held that the defen- dant did not exercise due caution, and warned him to keep a better look out in future.

FIENDISH CRUELTY.
Disclosures of fiendish cruelty and slavery were made at Lobatal, Bechuanaland, when Rayaba, Coun sellor to King Tahekedi, who cently visited London, was charged with the murder of a Mosarwa tribesman.
ro-
Witness declared that the Mosarwa tribe were traditionally slaves of the Bamangwato tribe, be ing handed down from father to son, never drawing wages but work ing for food and clothing.. *
It was alleged, that Rayaba chased three of the Mosazwa who had fled, caught them in the bush, and tled them down to the ground with stakes, after which Rayaba and assistants flogged them with canes from sunrise until nine o'clock, stripping the skin from their vic- tims, and then left them pegged on the veld at the mercy of lions and wild dogs.
