UNWISE TO FOLLOW METHODS
OF MONOPOLIST.
There was one argument in the statement issued by the Suez Canal Company in reply to numerous re- quests for a lowering of the tran sil dues which may well have been read by British investors in French cans with surprise. The manage-
verbal 1ment wrote:-"In
and published statements it has been said that the company has dis- tributed a dividend of 267 per cent. Surely it should be unnecessary at this stage to point out that the imonetary unit in, which it is paid has depreciated, and this figure 'should, owing to the difference bo- tween gold and paper francs, be divided by five." British investors in French loans during the War. have never been able to secure from the French Governments any recognition in a practical form of the depreciation in interest and capital which they suffered through the devaluation of the franc. Yet it is significant that a French com pany does not refrain from making 26th June a point of this devaluation when iti 20th July, own interests are involved. It hap
pens also. that British shipping is 0th July by far the largest user of the Canal and that it pays dues in gald francs, Le., of the same value As before the War.
