BANDITRY ACCENTUATES LOCAL DIFFICULTIES.
OPTIMISM NOW FADING AWAY
"It is no exaggeration to say that the year 1930 was one of the most difficult and anxious periods through which this company has ever passed," said the Hon. Mr. J. J. Paterson, who took the chair at the annual meeting of the Indo-China Steamship Company, this morning. "Shipping - companies of all nationaltics have suffered by the world-wide depression in trade, and by the disastrous effects of shipping conditions in all parts of the world."

Firing on merchant ships had necessitated the provision of armed guards, and the further protection by H.M. ships. Over 100 instances of merchant ships being fired on in this section of the river were recorded dur- ing September and October alone.
