COMPREHENSIVE SURVEY OF COUNTY

YORKSHIRE'S STRONG POSITION
The Arst month of the County Championship programme has passed away clouded in thrilling struggles and creditable indivi dual achievements. It is at this stage that memories become short and futile discussions follow the fortunes of the respective counties and players. Thus it is that you have the complete figures for re- ference in case of any disagree- ment that may arise when discuss- ing cricket.
On the ferry the other day I was speaking to a friend interest- e in the County Championship straggle, and it is to him that I owe thanks for the most interest- ing compilation of figures given below. What I found of most in- terest was the table showing the average runs per wicket for a county and the corresponding average against that county. is a table seldom published but which is to the cricket enthusiast quite as important as the actual Championship table.
It
Yorkshire Team-Work, From the appended table it will be clearly seen that Yorkshire have the highest average runs per wicket and also the lowest runs per wicket scored against them. Considering that the cables have informed us
that only two cen- turies (Holmes 250 and Sutcliffe 120) have been registered for Yorkshire during the season, it can be taken for granted that the county has relied more on team work than on individual prowess. Vority has displayed even greater form than was expected at the close of the 1930 season and, with Robinson and Macaulay, has been the mainstay of the more than suc- cessful attack.
Formidable Kent Attack. · Kent, the present leaders in the race for championship honours, are also in 1 very satisfactory position. Here, again, on closer i observation we find that only two centuries have been scored in five matches-by Hardinge and Wool- ley. The Southern county's attack is very formidable at the moment with Freeman in form and Watt (quite a youth) and Hardinge lending valuable aid to what might once have been termed a "one man" attack.
In these early days of the new scoring system one cannot but notice the decline of the cham- piens, Lancashire. Last season they sustained no defeat, but the Jure

points
to all counties has been respon- sible for two defeats in the first month of this season. Curiously enough Lancashire have failed to register a firat innings win and have suffered two reverses in this department. Last season the champions won eight matches on the first innings out of twenty- eight.
Rousing Innovation.
It must be admitted that the new scoring system has brought out some really Are cricket dur- ing its short life. The match be- tween Surrey and Gloucestershire at the Oval provided what might be termed the season's sensation. Here we had two brilliant strate- gists, P. G. H. Fender and B. H. Lyon, striving desperately for the full points--and what a conclu-
sion! Again, at Bristol we read of a thrilling battle for pointe dur- ing the Gloucestershire-Hampshire match. Yes; I firmly believe that the new system has come to fur- ther the improvement of cricket from the spectators point of view. It would not be worth my while
to enter into details on the vari- ous interesting facts which have reaulted during the month of May as they are all so clearly set out amongst the following data."
