DEFAULT."
Australian Premiers' Plan Condemned.
CONVERTING DEBT INTO LOAN.
Melbourne, Yesterday. "This is repudiation and de- fault," Bay
Messrs. Lyons and Latham in a letter to Mr. J. Scullin, and the State Premiera in regard to the decision of the Pre- miers' Conference to convert the whole of the internal debt into a long term conversion loan, with a compulsory reduction of interest.
The letter expresses the fear that:-
"Persistence in advocacy of this policy will make honourable conversion impossible and great- ly prejudice the success of any new loan to assist the farmers and unemployed."

AMERICA'S DEFICIT.
ISSUE OF $800,000,000 3% PER CENT. BONDS.
REDEEMABLE IN 1949.
Washington, Yesterday.
In order to meet the National deficit, Mr. A. W. Mellon, Secre- tary to the Treasury, announces the issue of $800,000,000 3 perj cent. bonds, redeemable from 1946 to 1949, to be sold in public from June 15-Reuter's Ameri can Service.
[A message dated May 28 stated:-A United States deficit of over a billion dollars is shown in the Treasury,
The figures issued to-day is ascribed to the decrease in income tax, owing to trade depression. It is under- stood that the Treasury are con- templating an early issue of a large, long-term loan to meet the deficit and obviate the need of an increase of taxation, which is likely to be detrimental to Re- publican chances in the 1982 elec- tion.]
