COIL DESIGN.

The Effect Of Shape Discussed.

By N. M. Guddard, B.E.] Coll design is essentially a matter of compromise because of the large number of conflicting factors which had to be taken into consideration. Some of these are of a mechanieat mature, such as, for example, | physical dimensions, while others | are of an electrical nature, such as, for instance, the choice of a gauge of wire, an the relationship be- tween length and diameter.

In the first place apart altogether from size or shape, the choice of a Value of infuctarice which will be suitable for covering the required| waveband has to be made and in this the tuning condenser is the gov erning factor. although

stray capacities are the main considera- tion at the lower end of the wave band. The formulu from which the i resonant wave length for any parti- cular combination of inductance and capacity is shown at (2) below, the length being obtained by. multiplying 1885 by the square root of the product of the inductance (L) in microbienries and the capacity

wave

(C) in microfarads. For instance, to find the resonant wave length of n circuit consisting of a coil of an inductance of 200 microhenries with a condenser of 20005 mA in parallel. with it we multiply the two values, giving us 0.1. Of this we have to find the square root which is ap proximately 316, which multiplied of the constant (1885) gives us the wave length of about 585 metres.

re-

In a similar mauer, knowing the wave length and the inductance. a coil the necessary capacity to be placed in parallel to obtain

this wave length can be determined or

the capacity is known the quired inductance can be calculat- unt. Tuning condensers as a rule are of a maximum value of either; 0085 mid or .0005 mifd, so that it is generally a matter of determining in value of inductance which when ased with the condenser will cover the desired waveband.

SINGAPORE WIRELESS SOCIETY,

Defaulters To Forfeit Membership.

Rather drastic action, has had to De adopted by the Committee of the Singapore Amateur Wireless So- ciety, on account of the lack of sup- part shown by the majority of the Asiatic members. Subscription fees have not been paid by a large number of those who signited their intention to join the Society and who, in view of their attendance at the initial meetings which wore held, were duly elected members of the Society when it was formed. It has now been decided to give all defaulters a month's notice calling upon them to pay up or forfeit their membership. The action was taken at a recent meeting of the committee and definite instructions were given to the honorary treasur- er to notify the defaulters and give them a month in which to pay their fces. After the period of one month, if the subscriptions are still unpaid, membership will cease.
