BATTLESHIPS OF THE FUTURE.
Vexed Question of Size.
20,000-TON VESSEL.
The size of the battleship of the future continues to excite Interest in Naval and other circles, and at- tention has been directed to the prospect of limiting expital ships to 20,000 tons, carrying guns of no greater calibre than 13 Inches.
I understand that the Admiralty has not made a decision to that effect, and, of course, the abolition of the ship of the line has never been contemplated, though its ideal tonnage and armament are, and have for a long time been, a subject of earnest consideration by the Admiralty and in Naval circles generally.
It appears to be wide of the mark to speak of a 20,000-ton vessel mounting eight or more 12in, guns costing in the neighbourhood of £5,000,000, when

"Washington" Cruisers.
! It has been a matter of general knowledge that with the completion of the programme of the 10,000 Washington cruisers no new ships of this particular class would be (constructed. The French, in their latest cruisers, are reverting to vessels of approximately pre-war design, speed being sacrificed for protection and gun powers. In Naval circles the relative value of speed and protection is being closely debated, but it is premature to state that decisions have been reached on the design of ships which cannot in any case become practical proposi tions until the
expiration of the London Treaty in 1936.
The United States of America are known to favour the very large ship. and while navics continue to be regulated by treaty on a category and individual tonnage basis op. reduce position to proposals to drastically the individual tonnage of battleships may not unnaturally be Jexpected from the U.S.A.
It is deserving of emphasis that while Britain, America, and Japan have systematically adhered to their į preference for fixing the individual ¦ tonnages and the precise number of į. vessels of each category, the French, with shrewd good sense, have insisted on freedom of action with an agreed total tonnage.
France's Fleet. The result is to be seen in the final arrangements of the Anglo- French-Italian agreement, by which
France, with agreement
her "capital ship tonnage" of 70,000 tons, can obtain a fleet of cruisers and destroyers in 1986 little short of our own in strength and num- hers. Whereas Britain, the U.S.A., and Japan restricted themselves at Washington to a specified number 19th May of vessels of a maximum of 35,000 tons, France very wisely retained 5th June
the right to utilise her 70,000 tons as she thought fit.

HONG KONG BENEVOLENT SOCIETY
Many divergent views are held, but to the best of my knowledge of naval opinion Admiral Sir Herbert Richmond is alone in advocating for our future ships of the line a ton- nage of 10,000 or below. Į
No one disputes that vessels of 7,000 tons, or indeed of 4,000 tons, could perform the duties of a navy If all nations agreed, and could be trasted for generations to continue
to agree, to this limit..
