health standpoint,
The hero of the occasion
We quote the following from the ex-jumping rider, "Snowy" Chicago's Health, published by
the School of Sanitary Instruction of that city:
"The number of cases of infec- tion of the skin betweer. the toes. and behind between the fingers,
the ears, during the past year, has reached almost epidemic pro- portions. In the control of any disease, an important factor is the means by which that disease is transmitted from an infected person to a healthy person.
"It is well known that members of golf-clubs, and those who fre- quent swimming-pools, are subject to skin infections of the feet-es- pecially between the toes. There is no doubt that this infection oc- curs as a result of walking bare- foot in these places.
ngo.
"The leather strap in street. cars was displaced, several years for the reason that it was found insanitary, it having been definitely proven that skin infec- tions were transmitted through this agency.
Miniature Golf Blamed. "The Chicago Department of Health directed Dr. Cleveland J. White to undertake a series of laboratory experiments to deter mine the cause of the infections. Under the direction of Dr. White, an investigation was carried out to determine the probability of the | disease being transmitted by the handles of clubs used frequently by many individuals at the minia- ture golf courses which have be- come a vogue in recent years."
It was discovered that the or- dinary leather-covered elab handle used at such courses accumulated a layer of germ-laden material- the result of perspiration plus dirt plus germs from the diseased skin of individuals who had used the clubs. The following is a re- sume of the report of the findings resulting from the investigation:
