MURDER OF INDIAN OFFICIAL.
Two Persons Arrested.
Midnapore, April 9. Following the outrage which resulted in the death of Mr. James Peddie, District Magis- trate, the Collegiate School pre- mises were guarded on Tuesday night by police with fixed bay- onets.
It is reported that a bullet found lying on the ground near the scene of the outrage, is of the dum dum type and is differ- ent from one extracted from Mr. Feddie's arm. The latter is of the type used by the German iuring the War.
This arouses the suspicion that there were at least two persons carrying two revolvers of differ ent types.
The men arrested include Kishirodekumar Dutt, and Bibe- kananda Bose, belonging respec- tively to the fourth year of the B.S.C. and the first year of the 1.S.C. classes at the local college. The local Municipality and the teaching and clerical staff of the Collegiate School adopted resolu- tions abhorring the dastardly outrage.

During the preliminary in- quiry the police discover- ed another bullet
the floor. A bullet mark was noticed in the southern, wall of the room in which Mr. Peddie had been sitting. It appears, from the in- clination of the bullet mark in the wall, that the assailant was very close to Mr. Peddie and ob- viously aimed to shoot him in the head.

Enterprise by Swedish | Only one Berth in Four

A new service is to be inaugur ated
during
April, connecting Sweden, Norway and Finland with Cunada. The only connection, so far, between Sweden and Canada are the calls of the Swedish America Line's passenger steamers at Halifax. The new service is to be operated by a sister com- pany of this line, the Swedish America Mexico Line, of Gothen- burg. To commence with, four vessels will be put on this service, of which two will be Swedish and two Norwegian, ensuring a sail- Ing each eighteenth day.
The new service is the result of thorough investigations made on both sides and amongst both importers and exporters the need for this connection was emphasis- ed.
Sweden exports to Canada con- sist mainly of wood pulp for the Lake Michigan district via Mon- treat, iron, steel, machinery and granite, general cargo usually finding its way via Hamburg or Antwerp. During recent years much of the 30,000 tons of wood pulp exported from Swedish ports to Canada was carried in tramp steamers by

It is merely facing the fact to any that shipbuilding is now in a very bad way. Quite recently Sir Alexander Kennedy, speaking at a launch on the Clyde, said that the Industry had never been AD de- pressed us at present for twenty years, with possibly one exception. Again during the past week Com mander Craven, managing director of the northern works and ship- yards of the Vickers-Armstrong Company, said at the launch of the Bermuda on the Tyne: "I am sorry to say that I have no mess- age of encouragement regarding the state of the shipbuilding in- dustry of the country. My own company has not a single inquiry for any type of merchant vessel, and I believe this is the state of affairs; competi- with practically all our tors."
That is literally true, comments the Financial Times. The inquiry for ships of any and every type has dried up. In the matter of new orders, March has proved to be no better than January and February, during which period orders were confined to a few small and unimportant craft for the Norwegian-special purposes, such as dredgers. EMPEROR'S FAVOURITE RECIPE FOUND.
The recipe for a gume ple which
is stated to have been the favourite delicacy of the Emperors Hadrian (117-138) and Marcus Aureliva (161-180) has come to light among some records of Lucius Commodus Verus, the adopted son of the Em- peror Hadrian. It was called pesta permatum. The recipe is as fol- lows:
Take 70 decagrammes (11⁄2 lb.) of wild boar meat, the flesh of a pheasant, and four lege of a sucking pig. The latter are to be filleted and filled with meat of the wild boar cut very small and stewed until tender

It is a well-authenticated fact of the that to-day 75 per cent. building berths in British and Irish yards are unoccupied with ships, which, put in another way, means that only one berth fr is in operation. Unemplo t is. indeed, now rather than the exception. On thyne, only four yards are left in opera- tion and on the Wear stagnation reigns supreme, while at Hartle pool the yards are wholly empty and idle. Unemployment among the work- ers has risen apace of late, and now exceeds the alarming figure of 95,000 men, or 46.6 per cent. of the total insured workers. Thus, not far short of half the workers normally engaged in shipbuilding and ship-repairing are without work to do and "on the dole,"
