A WHOLE WEEK'S NEWSPAPERS IN ONE.

The Filipino steerage passenger charged with the murder of Mr. John Harrison, on the high seas, aboard the R.M.S. Empress of Russia, in February last, pleaded "Guilty," on his appearance at the Assizes, but after some discussion it was ordered by the Court that a plea of "Not Guilty" should be entered. Counsel in the case were divided in opinion as to the precise nature of prisoner's admitted insanity, expert medical evidence, it was stated, having been taken on both sides. The OVERLAND CHINA MAIL contains a full account of the opening stages of the trial.

Proposed revision of the percentage of assessments on tenements, payable as rates, is indicated in an official motion to be brought before the Legislative Council. The effect of the motion, if passed, it is considered, will tend to equalise the burden of assessed taxation in the Colony. The OVERLAND CHINA MAIL gives an extract of the official motion, pointing out at the same time what may be con- sidered to be its effect.

*

* *

A bomb outrage in Yaumati, for which the motive still appears to be obscure, is also reported in the OVERLAND CHINA MAIL. The affair, which happened in the heart of a crowded district, resulted in the death of the accountant of an hotel, and was carried out in an unusually cool and daring manner.

*

Traffic chaos in Chater Road, approaching midnight, brought an Assistant Superintendent of Police into Court as prosecutor, and resulted in a smart fine being Imposed upon an Indian motor driver. The OVERLAND CHINA MAIL contains a full account of the hearing, during, the course of which several unusual features were brought out.

Sports features in the OVERLAND CHINA MAIL include special descriptions of the racing at the Fourth Extra Race Meeting of the Hong Kong Jockey Club, and exclusive reports of finals in the Hong Kong Cricket Club tennis tournament.
