Miss Dietrich's current picture is for the most part an excellent example of direction with a clever performance by the star. But the story is a clumsy affair and the dialogue is emphatically amateur- ish. It was written by Josef von Sternberg, who directed the pro- duction. He is somewhat out of his element as a writer and like mast motion picture directors who turn Sucking Pigs, to order their own literary aspirations into Sust, Beef ilm form he gives more attention to the cinematic quality of his in- Veal cidents than to the reflection portrayal of ordinary buman emotions.
