SHIPPING TAX.

THE CHINA MAIL.

RECENT DECISION OF TURKISH GOVERNMENT.

The decision of the Turkish Government to impose a tax of five plastres on all cargo ships proceeding to the Black Sea in order to improve the country's is, perhaps, life-saving service not so unwelcome as most taxes which have to be borne by ships running to the Eastern Mediter. ranean and Black Sea, but it is a 100 per cent. increase on the pre sent impost, states the Journal of Commerce.

The Turkish organisation for rescuing shipwrecked mariners first came up for discussion in 1866, and in consequence of the steps taken by foreign shipping interests in Constantinople was established in 1869. This organ- isation was paid for by a special tax of 15 paras per ton from each ship of over five tons leaving

Nihonsokat, from Tokyo.

With this money a number of stations have been established along the European and Anato- lian coast, some of them being fitted with lifeboats, and all with rocket apparatus. The lightship service round the entrance to the Bosphorus is an integral part of the arrangement, and it must be said to the credit of the Turkish Government that within the last few years they have made every effort to make it as efficient as possible, enlisting the services of one of the principal Dutch ex- perts on rocket and lifeboat work. in the batch of wrecks which re- cently occurred round the mouth of Dardanelles, the Turkish Life- saving Service were responsible for a number of rescues.
