CAR SERVICE.
What Many People Expect.
THE CHINA MAIL.
have scen
The last few years the introduction and development of a system of service in cars that are sold. and prospective owners have come to expect this service with but often a hazy idea of what they are really entitled to. Many people expect that everything that goes wrong with the car within a certain time will be fixed free of charge. As a matter of fact, no. thing is done free of charge. Manufacturers have realised that their products must have a good start in life, and, as result, have added a little to the price of their cars in order that necessary work can be carried out on the car by their own dealers or agents. This work has certain definite limits, and anything beyond this is charg ed to the customer in the usun!
way.
Some car distributors have dif-
al-ferent methods of dispensing ser
vice, but, on the whole, the scheme to much the same boils down thing, and the intention of this article is to show just what may be expected under the bending of "free" service. First, it must b explained that, from the moment a new car is, put into service any repairs or adjustments must fall into one of three classes-freo service, maintenance, and war- ranty,
Free service will include the initial adjustment of the brakes. controls, valves, &c., necessitated by their bedding in during the árst few hundred miles ning.

of run-
Under the heading of mainten- ance are all repairs and adjust- ments due to legitimate wear and tear, and an it fellows that these charges must be borne by the pur- chaser.
While warranty is really the manufacturer's guarantee to re- place defective units and supply the part gratis, Jabour costs must be charged to the owner.
As a general rule when a man purchases a car he la given a fer- vice card, usually for 90 days. This card directs the owner to submit his car for examination by the service station at 500 miles for first service, and again a 1,000 miles, otherwise all ability in regard to warranty must cease. During these inspections the brakes are adjusted, tappet clear- ances checked, body and fender bolts tightened, and the many
other odd jobs that must be done skilful manipulations of the driv- when any piece of machinery is inter.

CITY TRAFFIC.
How To Speed Up and Ease Congestion,
J
There are, states The Commer- cial Motor, many things that could be done to speed up traffic move- ment and esse congestion without singling out any particular clasa of vehicle and subjecting it to hardship.
There is, of course, the sugges- tion that we have made several times in the past, namely, that the constables controlling eroan-road träffle should allow shorter periods for the traffic in "each direction." This would make a great improve- ment.
If other slow-moving unita, par- ticularly horse-drawn- vehicles, were forced to keep well; to the loft side of the road the beneft would be noticed immediately. Similarly, if vehicles travelling at medium speed could be percuaded as surely they could be—not to occupy the crown of the road, this would help.”
