All the other suggestions how. ever are rejected including the ac- celeration of freight and passenger services which he regards matter for the Air Ministry. The P.M.G.'s final remark is "while a gradual Improvement in speed is to be hoped for, the Post Office would be reluctant to see the adop tion of an accelerated schedule which could not be regularly main tained in practice.”
A Deplorable Fallacy, This last statement, of course, ia the most absurd and misleading of any that has yet emanated from the Post Office. It displays fundamental ignorance of the very principles of air transport that hodes ill for the immediate future of the Empire air mail system.
a
As every transport expert is aware (save apparently the P.M.G. whose department should have ex- port advice at its disposal) the ac celeration of practically any form of transport-air transport in par ticular results not in a grenter likelihood of irregularity, but in an assurance that schedulce can be maintained with greater case than with the slower system.
Acceleration of the air mail in- volves the employment of faster types of aircraft on the service, a more intensive ground organisn. of tion of the route in the way night flying and landing equip ment. All these in turn mean a far greater elasticity of operation, enabling time lost through any be made good in far cause to quicker time than is the case of Present, when the carriage of the ar mail is subservient to the phy sical comfort of passengers and the comparatively slow, if econo- cal, cruising speed of a multi- engined passenger airliner.
Until the Post Office is made to realise this fundamental fact, and afforda aviation support sufficient to enable passenger and mail alı services to be separated, any num- ber of delegations will be power- less to effect any real improvement
