DOCTOR'S WARNING.

"Lawrence of Arabia" le dead.

at

The hero of a hundred thrilling exploits in the desert exists no longer; in his place there is a self- effacing.. hard-working, spced- loving fellow who is known to his companions Cattewater Air Station, near Plymouth, as Air- craftman T. E, Shaw, writes Dally Express Correspondent.

The recent inquiry into the Ply- mouth flying-boat disaster once more directed the limelight on him, but it was Aircraftman Shaw and not as Colonel Lawrence that he gave, his evidence.

2

Numbers of people asked, "Why did he do it?" but not one of them found the real reason for his de- cision to hide himself away in the

obscure position. It was said that he was tired of public life. It was anid that he wanted peace and quiet for the great task of trans- lating the Odyssey.

The real secret was revealed to me by a friend of the air- craftman. Colonel Lawrence join-j ed the Royal Air Force for the sake of his life.

His life was despaired of just before he joined up in 1922.

and

During his campaigns travels in the desert and in the forgotten corners of the globe he had been wounded numbers of times. His body was almost rid- dled with bulleta. His doctor i warned him that he had only (eighteen months to live-and then only if he lived in perfect peace and quiet somewhere in the South of France.

That was not Lawrence's idea of life. Peace and quiet, yes; but, idle- ness, never! So he enlisted as a mechanic in the RA.F. There he could have perfect seclusion, but there would be hard work and an oportunity of Indulging in his favourite craving, speed.

From time to time the name of Aircraftman Shaw was heard-in various towns in India and other parts of the East, and then he came to Plymouth.

"All signs of his failing health have disappeared," said Aircraft- man Shaw's friend to me. "The life of discipline and the open air has given him a reprieve from his sentence of death, and he is now as strong as any one.
