There were only two Championship events on the pro-

in all.

By the death at Tsehchow, | gramme at the H.K.C.C. yesterday Rev, Stanley P. afternoon, and only four matches Shansi, of the Smith, on January 31, the second break has occurred in à famous group of athlete missionaries known as the "Cambridge Seven," salts: who left London for China over forty-six years ago.

The frat break in the "Seven" was caused by the death of Bishop Cassels in China five years ago,

Lifetime in China. "Smith was stroke in the Cam- bridge Eight in 1882, and would have done excellently at his books had he given as much attention to them as to rowing. He was the son of a London surgeon.

soon

"He was sent to the Province of Shansi to learn the language. He became 46 eloquent In Chinese as in English, and he spent all his life in the province. For thirty years he had been work- ing at Tsehchow.

"The rest of the 'Cambridge Seven' are just around 70. C. T. Studd, who played in the Ashes'

match against Australia, and was one of the famous cricketing brothers, celebrated his 70th birth- day in the Belgian Congo, where he is now a missionary.

"Sir Montagu Beauchamp was for thirty years in China, and has only just come back from a visit. Arthur Polhill was forty years in China, and is now a Hertfordshire vicar. His elder brother, Cecil, worked for some time on the bor der of Tibet. Both played cricket for Eton and Trinity Hall, Cam E. Hoste, 'the bridge. Mr. D. fifth,' was for 30 years director of the China Inland Mission."

GRIMMETT'S BOWLING

RECORD.

Since Connection With

South Australia.

ONLY SIX SEASONS.

Adelaide, Feb. 28. C. V. Grimmett, the Test bowler, has made a new record in Sheffield Shield cricket by taking more than 212 wickets. Hitherto the record has been held by Ernest Jones, also a South Australian, with 268, closely followed by Saunders, of Victoria, and George Giffen, of South Australia.

Grimmett's record, however, is the more remarkable because he has taken all his wickets in a little more than six seasons of cricket. All but nine have been taken sincə he transferred to South Australia at the start of the 1924-5 season. He has now obtained 661 wickets In first-class cricket, a total only exceeded in Australla by G. Giffen, C. T. Turner, H. Trumble, F. R. Spofforth, W. W. Armstrong, and A. A. Malley.

Plans, it is understood, have been made for the building of a special balloon with new features, which would make it a formidable competi- tor, and that the only obstacle is Iack of sufficient means (no more than about £1,200) for construction.
