An official communique makes it clear that, in spite of reports to the contrary, there is no scheme afoot | for the extension of the State and that Broadcasting Service, misapprehension has been created by the contents of a confidential departmental circular issued by the Director of Wireless having been divulged.
It is probably true that the offi- cials In charge of the service would like to see it Improved, and they possibly advocate schemes of State support. But so long as the pro-. sent financial stringency continues, no Government would be justified in wasting money on what is, after all, a luxury.
If and when it can be shown that there is a strong public demand for broadcasting (which at present, to judge from the number of licences issued, does not exist), and when the industry is in a position to help itself, then steps may be taken to foster its growth.
Until then, the Government would do well to steer clear of such pro- jects as extension and sponsored programmes.

London, Jan. 8. Things are not always as they seem at the B.B.C. The other day I found
of the best-known boadcasting comedians. He нав under another name.
The matter he was using for the wireless was extremely funny, but 80 entirely different from that in which he has always specialised on the stage that he thinks it policy to appear under a name by which he cannot be identified.
Several first-class, singers also adopt another name when they ap- pear in some of the lighter produc- tions.
Should Listeners Judge? A friend asked the other day why the B.B.C. in its search for new talent does not broadcast auditions. He thinks it would be rather good fun to hear new artists in this way. But listeners acting as a jury would be seriously handicapped. At a stage audition they could ex- press their feelings at once and, if necessary, throw things. At a broadcast listeners are the folk who cannot answer back.
This disability is great enough in existing conditions to make any effort at increasing, it appear re- grettable.
But a jury delivering its verdict by post would certainly be novel.

This brings me to another inter- cating topic. Ia there a dearth of real, comedians in this country? Some efforts on the wireless sug- gest, an affirmative reply very strongly. Perhaps the English tasto In humour is changing.
Brass Band Music, "Why this sudden passion at Savoy Hit for brass bands?
Brass bands are all very well in the North Country, where they are ured in large numbers; but why inflict them on the people who still listen-in on Sundaya?.
