INITIAL EXHIBITION BY LOCAL

CLUB.

SKILL AND GRACE.

An interesting display of fenc ing, which included individual bouts with foll, epce, and sabre, as well as a bayonet exhibition, was given in the gymnasium of the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club on Saturday afternoon by miem- bers of the local Fencing Club.

Although the Club was formed only a short time ago, the display evidenced the rapid strides made by some of the members, who, until a few months ago, had hard-

play; whilst the exhibitions by the senior members were in many cases distinctly impressive.

Foils Exhibition.

The first item on the "pro- gramme of events" was an ex- hibition with the foils between Mr. F. J. T. Locke (formerly of the Salle Bertrand, London) and Commander J. H. P. Southby, R.N., which was interesting for the swiftness and inveteracy of attack and parry, of riposte, re- mise, counter-riposte, and reprise. Mr. Locke, whose perfect balance, subtlety of attack, and prepared- ness make him a formidable op- ponent, scored repeated advan- tages over Commander Southby, who, nevertheless, gave a pleas ing performance.

Bayonet Contest.

The Bayonet exhibition between Lieut. Woods, R.M., and "Mr. A. N. Other," proved an enter- taining interval in the series of

being happily deseribed by Lieut. A. M. Anstruther, R.E. (also a former pupil of M. Bertrand), who was unfortunately unable himself to take part in the fenc- ing bouts, owing to an injury to his ankle.

Ladies' Foils.

The spectators showed keen iza~ | terest in the ladies' foils exhibi- tion and, considering that most of the contestants were compara. tively novices when they joined the Club, they gave without ex- ception a lively and graceful dis play. In the first bouts Miss Joan Beavis beat Miss Eileen Bonnar by four points to two, and Miss Hallifax beat Miss Clare by four points to three. Miss Beavis and Miza Clare were by far the most skilled fighters and showed a surprising mastery of the more complicated features of foil-usage. Epee Pool.
