BAG-AND-SHOE MODE.
Shoe shops specialising in oven- ing modes are now displaying in- numerable shoe and bag ensembles.
A writer says that she has seen a red pair of velvet shoes, the dumpy velvet bag having a deep flap trimmed with tlers of leather leaves. Across the instep of tho court shoes were more red leaves, Exactly the same style is made in peacock blue velvet.
Other court shoes in pale blue moire have a narrow ruching of rib- bon as a large lover's knot on the toe cap, a replica of the design ap- pearing on the vagabond bag.
HAVE A BEADED COLLAR.
Boaded collars are not yet too general, and the one a lady writer Wan shown in a fashion house at Home the other day was particularly original. It was do- signed for an afternoon frock, and consisted of small blue beads, strung together in a carlods fashion, with no net backing. - Thiệ wan in a modified Peter Pan shape, and was securely fastened in front by two round, screw beads.
Of that popular turquoise shade, his collar would look its best on a black frock. It comes from France and would be difficult to copy,

Scents Blended To Suit The
Mood.
And so Miss 1931 shook her cock- tail, sitting before her looking- glass, and when it was just as she liked it she poured it into a tile cut-class receptacle and sprayed it over her hair, dubbed a little of it behind her eura, and reflectively rubbed just the merest whiff into the palms of her hands.

STOCKINGS ARE DARKER.
With coloured shoes, both in the afternoon and evening, it is sur prising to find atockings are no longer timidly tinted, but are, in many instances, dark and rich. Of course, the silk is very fine, peril ously so, and the colours include deep, beige, gun-metal, and a brown which is a dull mushroom wben much of the silk is folded.

Some of the bars are in luxurious satin-lined cases with bottles of opalescent glass that glint with colours. Some have battles. that are beautifully chased with a pat- tern of leaf and flower; others are plain in cut-glass.

EVENING GOWNS.
Skirts Very Wide indeed.
Margaret Carlton writes from London on January 28 to the Straits Times:
I commented last week on the. fact that evening gowns are to be; shorter in 1931, and now I hear from Paris that in many of the new collections skirts are very wide in- deed, and, no longer trammelled by the tight-fitting hip effect which is gradually becoming a thing of tho past, font out in voluminous draperies from the region of the hip-line.
And not the least important point about these new models is

fabric as the gown itself, have taken the place of that modern ver- sion of the petticoat, the founda- tion skirt, so that the rather un- beautiful edge below the knees or at the ankle has been entirely elim- Linated.
When hem-lines are uneven or treated with scallops, the panta- laons are cut in identical fashion, and are also embroidered in unison with the frock and the effect, the especially in
case of senil- transparent fabrics is extraordin- arily charming.
New Bare-Back Fashion.
It remains to be seen whether trousers in this new form; and I the fashionable world will adopt; am also wondering whether a rather amusing variation of the bare- back fashion will prove popular.
The model in this case, for which black chiffon velvet WRS the
medium, had a bodice out to a point in front and held high to the neck by a necklace of diamante,
At the back the same necklace secures the apex of a triangular plece of diamante embroidery, widening out towards the waist and drawn to the front in the form of a narrow belt.
Thus, the decolletage, discretion itself so far as the front and back is concerned, leaves the sider com- pletely exposed. Rather effective on some women, provided they have courage, but beat avoided by the lean kind, for riba"are"never lovely to look upon!

grey ensemble accompanied by blue shoes is seen with grey stockings much darker than the frock- material,
LACE FOR BRIDES.
Not every bride possesses family heirloom in the way of price- less lace which she may wear on her wedding day, but the modern fashion in bridal attires is to in- clude lace, if not old, then new lace beautifully patterned. It is not used, however, for the entire frock, a single strip for the train or veil is sufficient.
Just now,
cream lace is often seen over pale pink linings. White laces are not so frequent as darker: tints, and that may be because many of to-day's wedding gownE are made from ecry antins and crepe-moires which are so deep as to be almost beige."
NEW SLEEVE IDEAS.
The fullness of your sleeve may now come on the upper arm. The most fashionable designers include raglan akoulders with sleeves drawn from the elbow into a tight] fitting cuff, Cape sleeves are usual oneoate, but sometimes" they appear on frocks too and, in the evening, the fashion is to have a bertha collar to coincide with, a Victorian effect in the full skirt. But when you travel and want to be cosily clad, then choose a cont with wide sleaves pulled into deep fur culla. "A shawl collar of far held in place by a belt round the waist is cosy too,

QUITE' NEW.
For the new evening frocks fine | chiffons are now slightly stiffened, and satin is more lustrous than ever before. Satin scarves go with satin frocks, the narrow lengths of material being shaped and em. broidered.
For the afternoon, one-colour schemes are prominent, and that is why brown and shades of brown are popular; then shoes, stockings and gloves may match without the wearer indulging in eccentricities
of style. Kid, antelope, shark and snakeskin shoes are neat in outline, but trimmed with a second skin. Elaboration in the way of insets and clever piecings are seen in those shoes, which are worn with a dress of the valest pink georgette tailormades, but the colour must not contrast with the that had the bodice covered with tone and small crystal bugles, and the long costume. panela hung around the skirt, treat- ed in the same manner, were adorn- ed with two tiers of crystal fringe set just above the hom.

WARMTH THIS WAY.
A really invaluable "hot water bottlo" is the rubber cushion hold- ing a sandy substance, which keeps hot all day. This cushion opens with a flap, just as an envelope, and is made hot by pouring in a spoon- ful of water a few minutes being allowed for the "bottle" to become thoroughly hot. This is designed especially for the car. A heated cushion is a boon on a cold day. when you are busy shopping or going to the theatre,
There are also little pads for the pocket. Here, charcoal is allowed to amoulder inside a chamois cover- ed tin. It la quite safe, and is an old Japanese custom.
ATTRACTIVE RINGS.
Attractive rings which are part
of our "dressy" jewellery, Include many algret rings, and though these are large and inclined to give the finger a bulky appearance, they ara considered particularly chic. A clear, uncoloured substance, such' as is used for bag ornaments is used for some of the new-ringa, some. being inset with one stripes in black and a colour.
"Unpolished' wooden rings are showy and modish, and all these new rings are very light to wear.
