UNSINKABLE BOAT.

Mr.

CLAIMS.

London, Feb. 8.

East Sum Saunders, of Cowes, Isle of Wight, the flying- bout constructor, claims to have in- vented a new method of construc- tion which will make any sort of bout, particularly a flying boat, unsinkable. By the new method of construction a boat's aide will have an inner and an outer skin, mounted on hollow ribs, corresponding to the double bottom principle of ship con- struction. The outer skin will be of three ply wood, the layers of which, besides being cemented, will be sewn together with bronze wire. The inner skin will consist of cor- rugated steel, while the space be- tween the two will provide buoyancy and limit possible damage in a collision.

vice in the world established on the ISLE OF WIGHT CONSTRUCTOR'S Thames, if the production of n suitable type were all that needed. Meanwhile, at all seaside resorts, the speedboats are showing to holiday-makers how pleasurable! fast water-travel can be. The one form of motor-boating which shows decline from its previous beat is outboard racing. This amusement attained its great vogue perhaps too the first of the car, aero-suddenly. At any rate, plane, and motor-boat industries, in purpose of the outboard seemed to a time of general depression, may have been forgotten during the rac- in part be due to the imponderable ing "com." The first years of peace brought a remarkable extension in the use of motor-boats of every kind. Amer ieu, with her vast waterways, had a great and instant home market to supply, and at the same time she became the chief and practically the only source of world supplica; her industry had not been stunted In its growth during the War years, The manufacture us had our own. of marine engines and motor-boats is said to be the fourth most valu- able industry in America, ranking after cars, films, and radio. It may be mentioned at this point that com- petition from American engines and boats in British markets is still severe and well sustained. She is, indeed, by far our most formidable rival, and by comparison the com- petition from all other countries is negligible.

BAILINGS FROM HONG KONG SUBJECT TO ALTERATION.

20th Mar

The American industry supplies its output and its sales at home and abroad. Unfortunately, this is not done in England; individual firnis seldom make known their output, 20 that it is difficult to arrive at eren an approximate estimate of the strength of the industry. There are, however, said to be round about 100 firms engaged in either whole- the or part-time production of either marine engines or motor- boats, or of both together. Among this number are included many manufacturers whose well-known names are primarily associated with motor-cars-the firms of Thorny- croft, Morris, Ford, Riley, Trojan, Renault, and Chrysler, for example.

Olympia Motor Show,

ассев-

At the recent Motor-Boat Exhibi- tion, held as an adjunct to the last Olympia Motor Show, 60 firms ex- hibited engines, boats, or sories, This was the first occasion upon which the public were given a convenient opportunity to appre clate some of the many sides of motor-boating, and although pro- blems of transport and accommoda-

tion make it difficult to assemble a properly representative exhibition of engines and boate the models shown at Olympia which were

proved a strikingly popular attrac tion. -

But it was obviously impossible to demonstrate some of the more 1st Apr. important recent developments. Only those engaged near to or ac- tually in the activities. affected can appreciate the extent of the con- 6th Apr. version from steam and Bail or horse-drawn craft to motor-vessel. For example, on the many hundreds of miles of inland waterways con- trolled by the Grand Union Canal Apr.Company there are being substitut- ed for the barges large fleets of motor-lightera of greater power and capacity.

Motor-lifeboats, not only in the fleet of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, but also in the ships of the leading passenger lines, are steadily superseding the pulling and Balling lifeboats, with, already, an Immense Increase in the efficiency of this vital service. As an in- atance of the superiority of the motor-lifeboat, it need only be briefly mentioned that she can make headway when a pulling or selling boat cannot. In the fleeta of the smaller flahing boats the motor is now almost universally used, either For an auxiliary or main power. one thing, the motor helps a fisher- man to reach and return from his working ground on days of calm, when, had he still to rely on sall or oars, day's catch would be lost. It also greatly. extends his radius of action. This is an ad- vantage which is inducing the larger vessels which.., work farther offshore to replace all or steam with a marine engine,
