No doubt it is expensive to feed an elephant on canary seed, though the proprietor would have had his money back in time-when the elephant began to sing.

Sir Ernest Thompson, Chairman of the British Economic Mission to the Far East, struck a cheerful note in his speech at the Jong Kong Hotel last night when replying to the Hon. Mr. C. Gordon Mackle at the dinner given by the Hong Kong branch of the China Association and the British Members of the Hong Kong Chamber of Commerce.

In concluding his reply, Sir Ernest said that in his opinion far
