"MEN OF THE NORTH"-LAST
SCREENING TO-DAY,
SNOW BLINDNESS.
Rogers's voice has A happy quality of youthful freshness and vigour and Misa Brian intones her The sound background of river life lines with engaging intelligoncs,
and plantation days was pleasing- by injected into the play by Richard
Wallace, the capable director. It is a picture that young and old will enjoy,
"TEMPLE TOWER."
48 Im-
Snow blindness, an injury to the eyes caused by looking constantly on the dead white of snow in sun- Ught; a blizzard that isolated their camp; chilblains and frozen ex-.
Lighting plays almost tremities, and the peril of wild portant a part in the "mood" of a animals in a Winter wilderness mystery picture as the story itself, were among the troubles braved by in the opinion of Charles G. Clarke, the actors who appear in "Mon of Fox Movietone camera man, who is the North," "Metro-Goldwyn-nown for his unique photographio Mayer's vivid drama of the Cana- technique and results. diun wilda, now being screen- ed in the Queen's Theatre.
"Each scene of a mystery plc. ture," explains Clarke, "Is general- ly aimed to produce some certain effect-suspense, terror, surprise, and so on.
"Dim, shadowy lighting, with brighter angular shafts and beams ut a slightly futuristic angle where such added light is necessary. to show the action clearly, are much more productive of eerie effects than a broad, harah illumination that hides nothing. But all this must be done carefully and without any too-startling qualities, or the audience will have its attention
Camped in the high Sierras in dead of Winter, the cast went through hardships which they took ns a great adventure and in spito of the dangers of the trip, which included the filming of an actual blizzard, there were no ill results. The new picture is a vivid ad venture romance laid in the Cana- dian wilda, with Glibert Roland, noted in "The Woman Disputed" and other hits, playing the role of Louis the Fox. and Barbara Leonard the heroine. It was personally direct diverted
to the lighting itself ed by Hal Roach, famous producer rather than the mood of the scene of "Our Gang" and other comedy-something that must be avoided hits, and discoverer of "Rex, the at all costs." Wild Horse."
Roland plays a swashbuckling French Canadian in a grim battle of wita with a Mounted Police ser geant. whom he later saves in a blizzard. Miss Leonard is seen in the role of the millionaire's daugh ter, whose love he eventually wing. The cast includes Arnold Korff, Nena Quartare, Robert Elliott, Robert Graves, jun., and George Davis.
One of the sensational spectacleb in the picture is a landslide from which Roland rescues Miss Leonard. The daring
on dog sleds, race, through the blizzard, is another sensational bit in the picture. which, under the adventurous thrills, has a charming love story, Actual Northern dog teams, the animals brought from Alaska, were used in the snow scenes, filmed in the Sierras some miles from Truckee, on the California-Nevada line, Roland and Miss Leonard rode miles through an actual bliz.
zard drawn by these animals, while
another sled carried cameras to film
the sensational dash.
"RIVER OF ROMANCE."
Delightful entertainment is pro- vided in the Central Wheatre in "River of Romance," Charles (Buddy) Rogers' starring vehicle which opened there yesterday and will be seen and heard the next three days.
"River of Komarce." based upon the famous Booth Tarkington play, "Magnolia," has everything that is desirable in a talking picture. It has a gripping plot, actors who can talk and wear period costumes, local atmosphere and a romantic theme that rolls softly through the Lolourful scenes of Southern life in the 1840's like the languid "Father of Waters" itself.
It is a new kind of role for duddy Rogers. He appears as 1 soft-mannered youth who returns to his paternal home in A Mississippi plantation to be сол- fronted with the brusque and be- wildering code of duels and feuds and "honnuh, suh." Refusing to 8ght a duel he is branded a coward. He comes back, though, In a startling fashion, oventually winning the girl who had loved him through it all. Mary Brian is bewitching as the demure Southern girl who loves Buddy, and June Collyer, as the coquette, is effec- tive. Excellent character work le urnished by Wallace Beery, Fred Kohler, Mrs. George Fawcett, Henry B. Walthall and Natalle Kingston.
in "Temple Tower," the all talk. Ing melodramatic novelty which Donald Gallaher directed for Fox Movietone, Clarke has achieved some highly noteworthy results with his "mood" lighting of this breathless and exciting picture. Kenneth MacKenna, Marceline Day, Henry B. Walthall, Cyril Chadwick, Peter Gawthorne and Ivan Linow are in the cast of the production which opens to-morrow in the Queen's Theatre.
